Prime Minister Patrick Manning

Part statement by Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister, Patrick Manning on some of the Caribbean's men who took part  at the Beijing  2008 Olympics.

"Out of a field of 8 who contributed to the men's 100 meter dash, arguably the most talked about race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, six were from the Caribbean. There were two competitors from Trinidad and Tobago, three from Jamaica and one from the Netherlands Antilles in the race. The region was once again at the forefront of international competition and certainly had the world's undivided attention. Positive contributions  by Messrs Thompson, Burns, Bolt are the manifestation of the excellence that exists in collective human capital, of this petite giant that is the Caribbean.

We in Trinidad and Tobago are particularly pleased to single out our Silver medallist Richard Thomson, now embraced as the world's second fastest human being in only his first Olympics. We know that for him the journey towards greatness has just begun. We thank Marc Burns for his amazing effort and note that his value has in no way been diminished.

LABOUR UNIONS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO PLAN FOR ECONOMIC SHUT DOWN

PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD:- Labour Unions in Trinidad and Tobago are gearing up for a nationwide shut down of the country on September 8.

Thousands of members comprising the various bodies are now protesting what they say are issues of rising crime uncontrollable food prices and increasing violence in the country.

They are calling on the Patrick Manning administration to implement immediate measures to deal with the nation’s social ills.

David Abdullah, President of FITUN, one of the major union bodies told local journalists that they have had enough of the economic situation, a situation which he said continues to deepen the plight of the less fortunate and vulnerable in the society.

One other member said the nation and the government could expect a virtual shut down on September 8.

Meanwhile, the unions are also calling for the Trinidad and Tobago government not to rush into signing the Economic Partnership Agreement, (EPA).

David Abdullah, President of FITUN is saying that there is need for a negotiating and a review clause to be included in the agreement. He believes that the government should not sign on in its present form.

The EPA is an instrument involving trade partnerships, that builds on the Cotonou Agreement which replaced the Lomé Agreement, the standard trade arrangement for EU-ACP relations since the 1970s.

The EPA is also designed to help Cariforum nations to reduce poverty and achieve economic growth through sustainable trade with Europe.

Despite concerns raised the Trinidad and Tobago government has indicated that it will sign the EPA, which is expected to be done before the end of this year.

Bolt broke his own world record of 9.72 seconds, which he set in June this year. The Olympic record stood at 9.84 seconds, set by Donovan Bailey at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
